Choosing a Shield and Caring For It

Face shields prevent respiratory droplets from coming into contact with the eyes, the nose, and the mouth. A reusable face shield can be worn independently or along with a fabric mouth and nose covering. Learning how to properly care for a shield will increase its life and ensure that you are adequately protected while wearing it.

Disposable Shields Versus Reusable Shields

Disposable shields are usually sold in bulk. They are made out of a flexible polycarbonate sheet. The thickness of a disposable shield may be thinner than a product that is designed for extended use. Disposable and reusable shields can be worn by themselves or along with a cloth face mask. Many people prefer to wear a dual layer of protection, to further prevent the spread of germs.

These types of shields may contain an anti-fog feature. Some shields are classified as clip-on models. A clip-on model can be secured to a pair of glasses or a headband and many shield products will include an adjustable strap or headband for a more comfortable experience. This type of product is ready to be used immediately and can be adjusted to fit the diameter of one's head.

Care Instructions

Face shields block droplets, but the exterior side of a polycarbonate sheet is prone to come into contact with germs throughout the length of time that a shield is worn. A reusable shield should be removed from one's face and head and disinfected daily. Cleaning can be conducted by using an isopropyl cloth and wiping both sides of a shield or by dipping a shield into warm, soapy water and wiping off both sides of a shield. During the cleaning process, it is important to look for cracks, holes, and other signs of damage that could compromise the integrity of the shield. If any damages have been discovered, the shield should be disposed of and replaced.

If a soap product is going to be used to clean a shield, an antibacterial product should also be used. Standard cleaning cloths that contain loose fibers may leave traces of residue on a shield. To prevent this from occurring, shop for a microfiber cleaning cloth. After a reusable shield has been cleaned, it can air dry or can be wiped off with a dry cloth.

Commercial cleaning products, including glass cleaners, should not be used to clean a reusable shield. This type of product may be too strong to use on the material that a shield is made of and can weaken the polycarbonate material.
